They used to hear the Merry Venture before they saw her.
Bells once rang from her rigging like laughter as she sailed in each winter under Captain Kringle, her sails bright with patchwork and promise. The Merryneros, as his crew were called, rowed ashore with gifts instead of guns—spices, toys, oranges that smelled of sun and far seas. Children learned the name before their prayers.
Then the bells went quiet.
No one agrees how Captain Kringle changed, only that the winters grew lean and the ledgers grew thick. The sails were dyed dark, the gifts replaced with locks and iron, and the Merryneros learned new songs—ones about profit and taking. The brigantine still came each year, but only at night.
The Merry Venture slipped into ruined Port Royal on a moonless tide, bringing a chilling fog alongside. The city sagged into the sea, broken since the quake, its drowned streets offering no resistance. The Merryneros moved fast, stripping gems from fallen churches, prying copper from roofs, filling the hold with the wealth of the abandoned and the dead.
Captain Kringle watched from the quarterdeck, velvet-lined coat heavy with stolen finery. Nailed to the mast beside him hung the old bell, cracked and silent, its holly carvings worn but not erased.
As they turned to leave, Port Royal sank back into silence. Ahead lay the open sea, patient and watchful. And far below the waves, the old bells rang—not in warning, but in remembrance—because the ocean never forgets what a ship, or a man, once was.
